The Death of the Black Swan; Enter Bumblebee

The day I’ve been waiting for months finally came. If you recall my previous post about actually getting the Brembo’s, you’ll know that I ordered it at the end of January and didn’t end up getting them for almost 2 months after. Even after getting them, I couldn’t put them on because of the shitty weather we’re having. As I type this, we are under a snowfall warning and expecting 10-20cm of snow – WTF – it’s the middle of April for Pete’s sake!

Whatever, I’m sure you’re all sick of hearing about our century-long winter so let’s just talk about the exciting stuff. This last weekend ended up showing us a bit of mercy and we had +10C weather – nice enough for us to stay in the garage and wrench on the cars. Punit and JC came over and helped me swap out the brakes and flush the lines. You know when you have those projects/installs that should really only take an hour but one small thing goes wrong and it takes you like 3? It happens to us every time…

Anyway, I’ll talk about it as we go… On to the pics!

We got started right away by removing the original brake line. This was the first part that really should’ve taken like 1 minute. The brake line was caked in gunk and seized a bit so when we took the 10mm wrench to it, it sort of rounded off the nut. We ended up taking two vice grips to latch on and turn. Cue the “That Was Easy” button press.

The dust shields were removed – they’re not needed nor will they fit with the new brakes. You can see the new rotor to the right as well.


The stock rotor came off with a bit of hammering and the new one slid on like a glove. We put some lug nuts on to keep it in place while we installed the caliper.

Next problem was that the TE’s didn’t clear the calipers. It rubbed just barely on a part of the brakes. So who you gonna call? Zokusha Tuning!

As soon as we realized spacers were needed, I slid into Eric’s DM and he met me within half an hour to give me these 5mm spacers. The one good thing about this over shops or online sites is that if they want to be, they could be open all day, every day. Where would I get parts on a Sunday afternoon otherwise? Thanks to Eric @ Zokusha Tuning for the quick service! Life saver!


We popped the spacers on and then the wheel – perfect! The next hard part was getting the car back on the ground without getting the jack stuck or wrecking the bumper on the wood lol.


I am SO digging the look though.


The next few shots are just of the car outside. I didn’t think I’d hate it as much as I have been saying it, but I really hate taking pictures of black cars with black wheels. I did a quick edit on this because I had no polarizer and it was just bright as hell outside so everything was either overexposed or underexposed.

One last one before closing the garage and heading in. I suppose it’s OK – I’ve still got a little work to do before taking out. It’s been a while since I’ve done a full detail on the car, so I think I’m going to take a full day and give it a spa day.

I need to clay bar it, give it a 2-stage polish, seal and wax it up. I want to give the front bumper a little TLC – the grill is all chipped up from last year and I need to touch it up. I’m hoping some polish will get rid of a lot of the spots from a lot of the grime it’s picked up from driving. I’m going to be a bit more patient this year and wait until most of the rocks are gone. The combination of being a black car and being low is terrible for catching everything off the road. More pics soon!

LRD VDR: Trung Nguyen’s Track-Prepped Honda S2000

One of the craziest cars that attended the illmotion Sunday School Show & Shine was Trung Nguyen’s Voltex-equipped, HKS-powered Honda S2000. Around this city, it’s quite rare to see an S2000 anymore – unless of course you’re hanging out with the YYC S2000 crew, but if they aren’t around, an S2000 is not so common. On top of that, just seeing a fully track-prepped S2000 with really good quality parts (and money) paired with it is almost like looking for a Unicorn. There used to be a couple around town – Jackie Law’s S2000, which is now in BC and Nick Chow’s S2000, which has been sold and in another city to name a few… But to be fair, the S2000 is an impractical car – they were made to be at the track… That’s how they were bred and how they were meant to be used. If I do ever see one, it’s always an older guy that looks like he’s going through a mid-life crisis, but you just know that deep down he doesn’t really understand what the S2000 is capable of or what it was meant for. But I digress… That is a whole other story in and of itself for another time.

Now… I’ll just put it out there that I have not personally met Trung since he lives in Edmonton but I have spoke with him on numerous occasions about his car, my car, parts, and whatever might come up. He had been working hard to get the car ready for the show & shine, drove it down and then flew back out, leaving the car in Nick’s hands. We ran out of time with the shoot so regretfully, I didn’t get a chance to take as many shots as I had originally wanted. However, I do know that Trung has some significant plans for the S2000 and I’ve already called dibs on shooting it as soon as he’s done for next year – and I promise I’ll have a whole boatload of shots that we can all ogle over.

Whenever I shoot cars like Trung’s, it sounds odd but I get inspired to get great shots. A well-built car with every aspect in mind and no corners cut deserves every bit of my being to showcase it. Trung, with the help of Nick, built the car so meticulously and so carefully that I’m sure any of us can appreciate every inch of this S2000. I will let the pictures speak for themselves, but you’ll see pretty quickly why this car demands the attention that I speak of.

Early morning and we met up at Nick’s house. Could you imagine waking up to a garage like this? I would probably wake up 30 minutes earlier just so that I could give myself an extra 30 minutes to stand in the garage and battle myself on which car to take that day.

And boom – let’s get it started. Trung’s build is literally black on black on black. Black Advan GT’s, Black body, full carbon sticker-less Voltex Type 7 GT wing Voltex diffuser… All of that with greenery behind it made it work perfectly.

Close up of the rear of Trung’s set up with the Advan GT’s in matte black which I am beginning to grow quite fond of lately. I was having a first world problem moment after the photoshoot with Nick and JC about what wheels I want for the FRS. The GT’s look amazing on cars with aggressive aero and if the wheels themselves are in an aggressive size, but not so sure how they would look on a lowered, stock-bodied FRS… The debate continues…

A closer shot of the front fenders and some custom work. They are Challenge fenders that have been widened and re-radiused to +30mm by Circuit Garage. The extension piece on the front bumper was custom and fit on there to finish it off.

Did a closed hood/engine shot that I thought worked well since Trung’s engine was not overlooked either… I don’t think I’ve ever used this technique cause I thought it was always cheesy, but it worked in this case lol.

Inside sits the powerplant backed by the HKS GT Supercharger – which at this point in time has made the most power known globally at 372WHP.

Placing this as the last shot you’ll see until I get the chance to shoot it again – most likely some time next year, but it’s in the books now. I wish we had time to do the rollers but I’ll make sure it’s an epic shoot the next time we go out with Trung’s S2000!

Drool: Aimgain VIP GT Lexus LS460

Finally found pics of this beauty. I’ve seen it all over instagram but could never find high res pics of it – which it fully deserves. I got it off of Anthony Vargas photostream after diligently entering keywords into google until I found it.

This was the kit that debuted not too long ago at the Tokyo Auto Salon and tons of guys have jumped all over it – more specifically – the guys in Hawaii. Those guys do it up big in the VIP scene and it’s crazy how fast they work too. This car is from Cali though, which is also not a huge surprise since they’re hard hitters in the automotive scene too. I love that VIP is growing and it’s growing fast.

Anyways – pics speak louder than words. Might not be everyone’s taste, but it’s definitely a sight to see.

The rear of this kit is my favourite. Everything from the 3-piece lip spoiler to the rear bumper. Flows so well with the LS lines.


Looks like the rear fenders are kind of mashed, but still great fitment.

Now if only I could find someone to lend me some money to do something with the LS while I finish furnishing the house and fund the wedding… Looking at my LS makes me depressed now. Winter blues…
